Danube Biosphere Reserve

This is a unique natural complex located in the Danube Delta in the very south of the Odesa region, where the river flows into the Black Sea.

This area is considered one of the youngest and most dynamic landmasses in Europe, as the delta is constantly expanding due to river sedimentation, creating new islands and spits.

The reserve is of international importance and is part of a UNESCO transboundary reserve, underscoring its special role in preserving global biodiversity.

The reserve’s landscape is striking in its diversity: it features endless labyrinths of narrow channels, reed beds, floodplain forests, and dunes.

Thanks to the abundance of water and the unique climate, a true bird paradise has developed here. The area serves as a key stopover for thousands of migratory birds and is also home to rare species such as pink pelicans, white-tailed eagles, and various species of herons.

In addition to its ornithological richness, the reserve is known for its fish fauna, including relict sturgeon that enter the Danube to spawn, and the famous Danube herring.

The flora is no less fascinating: in the floodplains, you can find water chestnuts and entire fields of water lilies.

The administrative and tourist hub of the reserve is the town of Vylkove, often called the Ukrainian Venice due to its numerous canals.

It is from there that routes begin to the famous symbolic 0 kilometer marker, where the main mouth of the Danube meets the sea, creating an incredible landscape at the boundary of two elements.

Russian attacks on Odesa region

Almost every day, Russia strikes Odesa and the region with drones and missiles to target both civilian and critical infrastructure.

For instance, on the night of April 16, Odesa first came under a massive Russian drone attack, followed by missile strikes. 9 people were killed in the Russian strikes, and a significant number of injuries were reported.

On the night of April 14, the Russians launched a massive drone attack on the southern part of the Odesa region. Port infrastructure facilities and civilian buildings were targeted.

In addition, on the night of April 10, Russia attacked ports and energy facilities in the region. The city of Vylkove was left without power.
