Consequences of Russian nighttime attack on Kyiv and region
On the night of August 20, Russia launched a massive strike on Kyiv and the surrounding region. The Russians combined various types of ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and drones to inflict as much damage as possible on civilian infrastructure.
"In the capital, residential buildings were damaged, including a high-rise whose upper floors were destroyed, as well as a children’s hospital and a school," Zelenskyy says.
As of now, Russia has killed 12 people in Kyiv, and one more person in the Kyiv region. About 40 people were injured.
In the Chernihiv region, Russia attacked gas infrastructure.
Zelenskyy notes that while Moscow is investing in ballistic missiles and escalation, the world's response to such strikes is not always sufficient. According to him, as long as Ukraine lacks anti-ballistic capabilities, Russia will not seriously consider peace.
"We are doing everything to ensure we have that protection, and work on the FREYJA program continues every day. But Patriot interceptors cannot yet be replaced, and we need them every day. Every additional missile saves the lives of our people," Zelenskyy writes.
Massive Russian attack on Kyiv
On the night of August 20, Russia launched a combined strike using ballistic missiles, Kalibr cruise missiles, and drones against Kyiv and the surrounding region.
Russian strikes resulted in fatalities and dozens of casualties, and parts of the Sviatoshynskyi and Solomianskyi districts were left without power.
Due to damage to infrastructure, Ukrainian Railways has rerouted and canceled some commuter trains bound for Kyiv, Chernihiv region, and Sumy region.
Meanwhile, Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that the death toll from the nighttime attack on Kyiv had risen to 12, seven of whom were killed in the Solomianskyi district, with 34 people injured.
He also declared August 21 a Day of Mourning in Kyiv and announced a ban on entertainment events on that day.
