Russia strikes cathedral in Ukraine's Sumy city center with drone

In the center of Sumy, a Russian drone struck the city's symbol, the Holy Resurrection Cathedral of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine. There were many parishioners there at the time, and the liturgy was in progress, according to Oleh Hryhorov, head of the Sumy regional military administration.

According to the official, Russia struck the cathedral, a symbol of the city in the center of Sumy, with a drone.
"There is damage as a result of the Russian drone strike," Hryhorov says.

He adds that all necessary services are working at the site. An inspection of the area is ongoing.

In addition, the head of the regional military administration reminded that the Holy Resurrection Cathedral of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine is:
- The oldest stone building in Sumy;
- An architectural monument of national importance.
"Russian attack on such a sacred site is yet another example of cynical crimes against civilians and our cultural heritage," he stresses.
Consequences
A little later, the head of the regional military administration reported that, fortunately, no one was injured as a result of the Russian strike on the cathedral in the center of Sumy.
"As of 11 a.m. Kyiv time, no one had sought medical attention — neither employees and visitors to the cathedral nor passersby," he writes.
Meanwhile, the head of the Sumy city military administration, Serhii Kryvosheienko, reported that during the Russian attack on the center of Sumy, "there were many parishioners in the Holy Resurrection Cathedral."
He specifies that women were baking prosphora at that moment.
"The liturgy was in progress, people were standing in prayer... But let's not forget that our temple is a fortress! They will not be able to defeat us," the official quotes Bishop Methodius as saying.
According to him, none of the believers were injured.
Last night and today, September 11, Russian troops once again attacked Ukraine with drones. Air raid sirens sounded mainly in the northern and eastern regions.
Around 1 a.m., explosions were heard in Sumy. The Sumy regional military administration reported a Russian attack by strike drones on the Zarichnyi district of the city.
Russian drones struck a residential area and an educational institution. A fire broke out at the site of the strike.
A little later, the State Emergency Service of Ukraine showed footage of the aftermath of the Russian strike on Sumy.
