UN Secretary-General António Guterres has called for an immediate de-escalation of the war in Ukraine and warned against the situation spiralling out of control, which would lead to unforeseen consequences, according to the UN press service.
As the UN Secretary-General stated, the severity of the situation is evidenced by Russia's massive strikes in recent days, as well as recent threats to systematically attack Ukraine.
Guterres recalled that since February 2022, over 15,000 civilians have been killed in Ukraine, including nearly 800 children.
The official said that humanitarian workers were attacked, and serious violations of international humanitarian law continue.
He also mentioned the destruction of Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure, including energy facilities.
He warned that the intensifying conflict risked spiralling out of control, citing the dangers of miscalculation and unknown and unintended consequences.
In addition, the UN Secretary-General warned of the risks of miscalculations in the war and escalation with unforeseen consequences.
"The death spiral must stop," the official added, emphasising the need for immediate and sustained de-escalation and a full and unconditional ceasefire.
Guterres also noted the need for greater diplomatic efforts and adherence to international law, despite Russia's disregard for them.
Several days ago, Russian units began threatening systematic strikes against Ukraine and Kyiv in particular. In Moscow, they say this is a response to Ukraine’s regular drone strikes on oil industry facilities in Russia.
Europe has reacted to Russia’s threats of strikes on Ukraine and has summoned the ambassadors and diplomatic representatives of the aggressor country for talks.
