Analysis of the production dates of downed Russian weapons allows for an indirect assessment of Russia's stockpiles, according to a post by the advisor to the Minister of Defense of Ukraine, Serhii "Flash" Beskrestnov.

What the dates show

On Thursday, June 4, a Shahed drone arrived in Kharkiv, manufactured just a few days earlier. This prompted an analysis of the production dates of various types of weapons that Russia is using against Ukraine:

  • Shahed drones – usually arrive with a production date of 5–15 days prior. Russia attacks with them almost immediately after manufacture.
  • Iskander 9M723 – arrive with a 2025 production date. Russia's stockpile of such missiles is estimated at least 180–250 units.
  • Zircon missiles – all recorded examples are dated 2026.
  • Kh-101 – most often dated several months before launch, also 2026.
  • S-400 – arrive with a 2026 production date.
  • Kh-59 – dated the third quarter of 2025.

What this means

The overall conclusion: the production of drones and missiles in Russia does not allow for the formation of large strategic stockpiles – almost everything that comes out of the factories goes straight to the front. The exception is the Iskander missiles, whose stockpile remains relatively significant.

The data on recent production dates of downed Shahed drones aligns with information about increased production volumes. According to Bloomberg, drone production volumes in Russia increased by 117% in April compared with the same period in 2025. Moscow plans to produce 7.3 million FPV drones and 7.8 million warheads this year. The production of Shahed drones has also increased significantly, although a large part depends on Chinese components.

However, Ukraine is striking back: recently, the Ukrainian military took the Donetsk airport under fire control and blocked an enemy hub for launching Shahed drones.
