Russia and the United States are allegedly set to sign an agreement on Friday, June 5, to begin the design of a large-scale tunnel between Chukotka and Alaska, according to Kirill Dmitriev, a special envoy of the Russian leader.
Dmitriev said the signing of the document is scheduled for tomorrow. He claimed that the parties will agree to continue the design work and insisted that the tunnel will eventually be built.
Dmitriev also emphasized that the project could become one of the largest infrastructure initiatives in the history of relations between the two countries.
Dmitriev first proposed the so-called Putin–Trump Tunnel idea in October last year, suggesting a connection between Russia and the United States across the Bering Strait.
According to him, the project could be completed in about eight years and cost around $8 billion, provided it uses technology from Elon Musk’s The Boring Company.
He also argued that such a tunnel would open opportunities for joint resource development and become the first direct land connection between the continents via Russian and US territory.
Later, US President Donald Trump described the idea of a tunnel between the United States and Russia as "interesting."
Meanwhile, The New York Times reported that Moscow has grown tired of repeated visits by US presidential envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. Russia is expressing interest in shifting to a new format of peace talks.
