Russia keeps using banned chemical weapons on Ukraine frontline despite international treaty

Russian forces have actively used chemical weapons for the third week in a row in the Siversk direction, informs the Rubizh Brigade of the National Guard of Ukraine.
The military reported that Russian forces have intensified their activity in the Siversk direction. According to the brigade, the enemy uses motorcycle units and civilian vehicles in their assault operations.
"Thanks to a precise system of detection and fire targeting, our defenders operate so cohesively that enemy assault groups are eliminated several kilometers from our positions," the brigade said.
Fighters also reported an increase in enemy artillery shelling. Currently, the number reaches up to 200 shelling incidents per day.
The military believes this may indicate the enemy is planning large-scale assault operations.
"Our defenders are already preparing a worthy response to Russian forces," the brigade added.
Use of chemical weapons
"For the third week on this front, the enemy has used chemical weapons, which, unfortunately, cause significant harm to our defenders. These munitions spread poisonous substances extremely quickly, instantly dispersing through dugouts and lowlands," the fighters noted.
As a reminder, the use of chemical weapons in war is prohibited by the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC), signed in Paris in 1993. The convention bans the development, production, stockpiling, use, and destruction of chemical weapons.
Last month, Ukraine intercepted an order directing Russian forces to use banned chemical weapons on the front.
RBC-Ukraine also reported that the EU Council prepared a new sanctions regulation. For the first time, it officially accuses Russia of using CS tear gas on the front line in Ukraine as a method of warfare.
In the explanatory section of the document, European officials refer to reports by the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW). These reports were published at Ukraine's request in November 2024 and February 2025.
Additionally, earlier, the Defence Intelligence of Ukraine reported that Russians systematically use chemicals on the front. In particular, cases of enemy use of poisonous gas munitions have been increasingly recorded in the Zaporizhzhia region.
