On Sunday, January 25, the enemy deliberately targeted the Kherson thermal power plant with drone and artillery strikes. The shelling continued almost uninterrupted for a full day, stated Naftogaz CEO Serhii Koretskyi.
He said Russian forces are trying to deprive the plant of any chance to restore its equipment.
"The Kherson thermal power plant was the only source of heat for tens of thousands of city residents. Together with local authorities, we are doing everything possible to provide Kherson residents with alternative sources of heating," Koretskyi said.
He added that the Naftogaz Group will deliver another batch of aid to Kherson this week, including an additional 950 gas heaters along with gas cylinders.
Koretskyi also said other measures are being taken to ensure backup heat supplies, stressing that the heating situation in Kherson is among the most critical.
Russian strikes on the Kherson thermal power plant
Earlier in January, Russian forces struck the Kherson thermal power plant, with at least four direct hits reported on the facility. Due to constant attacks, the plant lost the ability to operate normally.
At the end of last year, the Kherson City Military Administration said Russian forces attacked the plant almost daily, making it impossible to restore operations. Local authorities are seeking alternative heating solutions for residents after the strikes.
Previously, in early December, Naftogaz reported another targeted Russian attack on the Kherson thermal power plant. As a result of the strike, the facility was effectively destroyed, and its operations were halted. Several days later, Russian forces fired approximately 100 shells at the plant.
