Russia heavily strikes Ukraine's Odesa: Downtown building destroyed, search for survivors underway

Last night, Russian troops launched a massive attack on Odesa and the surrounding region with over 50 drones. Residential areas and civilian infrastructure were hit. There are casualties, and the search for people under the rubble continues.

Extensive destruction and fires
According to the Odesa regional military administration, dozens of residential buildings were damaged as a result of the Russian attack on Odesa. A church, a kindergarten, a lyceum, a fitness center, and private vehicles were destroyed. Large-scale fires broke out in several locations.
Dozens of apartments in high-rise buildings were destroyed and damaged, building facades were damaged, and windows were broken.
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine specifies that:
- Two-story and four-story residential buildings were damaged
- Apartments on the second to fourth floors of a four-story building were destroyed
- In a nine-story building, fires broke out on the fourth and fifth floors due to the impact
- A cultural and religious building and cars were damaged, and windows were broken in neighboring buildings.
In the Prymorskyi district, 43 houses and, according to preliminary data, 122 apartments were damaged. Rescuers from the State Emergency Service of Ukraine continue to clear the rubble.
In the Pereiaslavskyi district, damage to three buildings has been confirmed. Over 200 windows were broken, 51 of which were destroyed by fire.
In the Khadzhybeiskyi district, search and rescue operations are ongoing - three people are still missing.

Lyceum damaged
According to the authorities, the Odesa Professional Lyceum of Construction and Architecture was the most damaged. A fire broke out in the building, which was quickly extinguished by firefighters.
"Currently, all relevant services are working on site, recording the consequences of the Russian strikes and assessing the extent of the damage. The information is being clarified," the Odesa regional military administration reports.

Casualties and rescued
Rescuers freed 14 people, including children, from under the rubble and from dangerous areas.
According to the Odesa regional military administration, 23 people have been injured so far.
9 people have been hospitalized, including 2 girls born in 2008 and 2013, and a 39-week pregnant woman.
One person is in severe condition, and 8 others are in moderate condition. All victims are receiving the necessary medical care.
The State Emergency Service of Ukraine reports that residents of the destroyed apartments have been evacuated to shelters, psychologists from the State Emergency Service and the National Police are working on site, and warming stations have been set up.

Search under rubble continues
According to preliminary data, there may still be people under the rubble. The State Emergency Service reports that there are at least 3 people. The canine service has been involved in the emergency rescue operations.
Operational headquarters, rescuers, and emergency services are working at the sites of the Russian strikes. The aftermath of the Russian attack is still being dealt with.

Russian strikes on Ukraine on January 27
According to the Ukrainian Air Force, on the night of January 27, the Russian army carried out a large-scale attack on Ukraine with 165 strike drones. Among them were Shahed-type drones, including jet drones, as well as Gerbera and Italmas drones and other types of aircraft.
Russian drones were launched from the territory of Russia, from the Kursk, Orel, Bryansk, Millerovo, and Primorsko-Akhtarsk regions, as well as from Hvardiiske and Chauda in the temporarily occupied territory of the Autonomous Republic of Crimea.
The Lviv region was also under Russian fire that night.
