Fears of a Russian nuclear strike circulating in Ukraine are unfounded. However, Russia’s nuclear arsenal still remains a serious threat, Kyrylo Budanov, Head of the Office of the President, stated in an interview with The Times.

According to him, the aggressor country has the capability to launch a nuclear strike “at any moment and at any distance.”

Budanov stressed that Russia’s nuclear potential allows the Kremlin to carry out such an attack.

“But this is, first and foremost, a question of political will. I have not seen any indicators of preparation for a nuclear strike. If there were, I would know, ” the intelligence chief said.

As a reminder, Russian leader Vladimir Putin recently claimed that Russia was forced to “think about ensuring strategic security” after the United States withdrew from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty.

The Kremlin leader also mentioned the Oreshnik missile system and emphasized the possibility of equipping it with nuclear warheads.

Earlier, the Institute for the Study of War reported that Russia is expanding its nuclear capabilities at the fastest pace since the Cold War and increasing its military presence near NATO borders. Analysts believe these moves could indicate Moscow’s preparation for a long-term confrontation with the alliance.

In addition, NATO countries criticized Russia’s nuclear policy, accusing Moscow of violating key arms control commitments and using irresponsible and threatening nuclear rhetoric.
