Russian leader Vladimir Putin has once again returned to nuclear rhetoric and announced the strengthening of Russia’s strategic forces during a meeting with Russian Armed Forces personnel.
During his speech, the Kremlin leader claimed that Russia had been forced to "think about ensuring strategic security" after the United States withdrew from the Anti-Ballistic Missile Treaty.
Putin also mentioned the Oreshnik missile system and said it could be equipped with nuclear warheads.
Separately, the Russian leader congratulated the military on the successful tests of the Sarmat intercontinental ballistic missile.
According to the commander of Russia’s Strategic Missile Forces, the first regiment equipped with Sarmat systems is expected to enter combat duty by the end of this year.
Putin claimed the missile’s range could exceed 35,000 kilometers.
The Kremlin chief also stated that the Sarmat is intended to replace the Soviet-era Voyevoda missile system and that it significantly surpasses it in combat capabilities.
Earlier, the Institute for the Study of War reported that Russia is expanding its nuclear capabilities at the fastest pace since the Cold War while increasing its military presence near NATO borders.
Analysts believe these steps may indicate that Moscow is preparing for a prolonged confrontation with the Alliance.
