German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul tells reporters at the G7 summit in France that Russia is helping Iran identify targets for strikes, and that this is part of Putin’s plan to divert the West’s attention away from Ukraine.
Russia assists Iran with targeting
According to the Minister, Moscow is providing Tehran with intelligence on potential targets for strikes.
Wadephul also notes that he had personally spoken with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, outlining Berlin’s position on its readiness to participate in stabilizing the situation in the Strait of Hormuz after the end of hostilities.
"Putin cynically hopes that the escalation in the Middle East will divert our attention from his crimes in Ukraine," Wadephul states.
He also says that Russian President Vladimir Putin’s calculations are not likely to succeed.
"This calculation must not succeed. We see very clearly how closely the two conflicts are intertwined. Russia is evidently supporting Iran with information about potential targets," Minister adds.
Due to the Iran war, oil prices could surge to record highs. There are two possible scenarios for developments in the Middle East.
At the same time, Putin could earn up to $250 billion from a war in Iran. These funds would allow the Kremlin to finance the war against Ukraine.
