On the night of May 28–29, Russian forces once again carried out a drone attack on Ukraine. One of the drones flew into Romania and crashed onto the roof of a residential building, according to the website of the Romanian Ministry of Defense.
The ministry reported that tonight the Russians resumed drone attacks on civilian and infrastructure facilities in Ukraine located near the river border with Romania. However, during the attack, one of the drones violated the airspace of a NATO country.
"The drone entered Romanian airspace, as tracked by radar in the southern part of the city of Galați, and crashed into the roof of an apartment building, causing a fire. Specialised teams from IGSU and other structures of the Ministry of Internal Affairs, the Romanian Intelligence Service, and the Romanian Police are working at the scene," the statement reads.
The ministry added that their radars had detected drones flying near the country’s airspace. In response, Romania scrambled two F-16 fighter jets and an IAR 330 SOCAT helicopter at 01:19.
"The pilots of the aircraft were authorised to engage targets throughout the entire alert period," the ministry’s website added.
What preceded the incident
Earlier that night, the media reported an explosion in the Romanian city of Galați. This happened after a drone crashed into a residential building. At the time, it was only assumed that it was a Russian drone.
The incident was also confirmed by the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations. They clarified that the drone strike caused a fire in an apartment on the 10th floor, and two people were injured. Firefighters quickly extinguished the blaze, and the injured received medical attention at the scene.
All of this occurred while Russian forces were actively attacking the Odesa region with drones.
