Romania prepares aid package for farmers blocking border with Ukraine
The Romanian government has prepared a package of measures aimed at assisting protesting farmers and truck drivers who are blocking the border with Ukraine, says Prime Minister of Romania, Marcel Ciolacu.
During a government meeting, the Prime Minister presented measures to aid Romanian farmers and truck drivers.
"We are approving a first package of measures agreed with farmers and transporters. It is clear that the protests were justified," stated the head of the government.
He specified that the measures include compensation of 100 euros per hectare and up to 280,000 euros for farmers for losses due to the war in Ukraine. Changes in rules demanded by truck drivers were also approved by the government.
Background
Recall that Romanian farmers blocked three border crossing points with Ukraine, namely Siret-Porubne, Vicovu de Sus-Krasnoilsk, and Halmeu-Dyakovo.
The border blockade began on January 13. Protesters demand that the government adopt a law that will address "as many of the issues they have pointed out as possible."
