Risks of duodenal intubation: What you need to know
Duodenal intubation has gained popularity. However, experts warn that the procedure can do more harm than good, potentially leading to complications such as infections, according to Ukrainian gastroenterologist Yevheniia Belinska.
Why it's harmful
The procedure poses several risks:
- It is invasive and can be traumatic to the body.
- It may lead to gallbladder dysfunction.
- Excessive esophageal irritation could trigger a pathological vomiting reflex.
- If performed in unsanitary conditions, it can cause infections.
- It may cause significant psychological discomfort.
Importantly, duodenal intubation does not improve bile flow or its timely evacuation from the gallbladder into the intestines.
Dr. Belinska recommends non-invasive alternatives such as ultrasonography of the abdominal organs and video gastroscopy.
Duodenal intubation is contraindicated for patients with the following conditions:
- Stomach and duodenal ulcers
- Esophageal varices
- Esophageal diverticula
- Gallstone disease (cholelithiasis)
- Aortic aneurysm
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- Severe health conditions
Procedure overview
Performed on an empty stomach, the process involves a flexible tube (up to 1.5 meters long) inserted through the mouth, down the esophagus, and into the stomach, duodenum, and gallbladder to study the bile content.
The probe provides information about the condition of the gallbladder, its functions, and detects parasites or their eggs. However, in some cases, the risks outweigh the benefits.
