German defense company Rheinmetall will build a new ammunition production plant in a safe region of Ukraine, reported Ukrainian Defense Minister Denys Shmyhal.

As Shmyhal explained, in London, on the sidelines of the international arms exhibition Defense Security and Equipment International Exhibition and Conference (DSEI), a meeting was held with the head of German Rheinmetall AG, Armin Papperger.

"We have effective cooperation in a number of areas, such as the production of ammunition, armored vehicles, and air defense solutions," the minister noted.

According to him, since the last conversation with the company's management, procedures for launching new joint production have been finalized.

"On September 9, land was allocated in a safe region of Ukraine, where a new Rheinmetall plant for the production of ammunition for the needs of the Defense Forces will be built," Shmyhal reported.

During the meeting, other important projects were also discussed, in particular the development of capabilities for repair and production of armored vehicles. Rheinmetall's lineup includes a number of new models that can strengthen the Defense Forces of Ukraine.

"With Mr. Papperger, we also discussed the development of the air defense sector, in particular how to jointly develop and improve solutions that will help us more effectively fight enemy drones. I sincerely thank Rheinmetall for the support provided and for the development of joint large-scale projects," the head of the Ministry of Defense added.

Rheinmetall is a German defense company specializing in the production of armored vehicles, artillery systems, ammunition, air defense systems, as well as electronics and drones. In particular, the company supplies Ukraine with infantry fighting vehicles, tanks, self-propelled artillery, ammunition, and air defense systems.

Earlier, Rheinmetall reported on the construction of a joint plant in Ukraine for the production of ammunition. A memorandum on the creation of a joint venture was signed during the Munich Security Conference.

In August, it became known that the German defense company plans to double the capacity of the Ukrainian plant for the production of 155-millimeter artillery shells.
