Restoring Ukrainian energy system requires international assistance - State energy regulator
To restore the power system damaged by massive Russian shelling, it is necessary to attract assistance from international donors and revise the electricity tariff for the population, according to Ruslan Slobodian, head of the State Energy Supervision Inspectorate of Ukraine.
He says that the damage caused to the power system is very large, and according to rough estimates, over the past month and a half, it has exceeded $1 billion. It is not yet known how to cover them.
"The electricity tariff or international assistance alone cannot cover these losses. That is, we will probably have to work in two directions: first, to work with our foreign partners to increase international assistance, possibly from the sources of frozen assets of the Russian Federation. And secondly, we will have to turn to internal reserves, and we may have to revise the electricity tariff," Slobodian says.
The head of the State Energy Supervision also reminds that the National Bank of Ukraine had earlier announced that the tariff would gradually increase over the coming years.
"Perhaps the first stage will be advisable to do in the summer because we need a really big financial resource to restore the power sector facilities," he emphasizes.
Earlier, Deputy Energy Minister Mykola Kolisnyk said that last year's revision of the electricity tariff for household consumers provided the Ukrainian power system with 3 GW of capacity.
