Russian President Vladimir Putin is counting on the West to grow tired and stop supporting Ukraine. However, that will never happen, states Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen.
“I think Putin's strategy has been to wait for us to stop at some point to give up, but of course, this will never happen,” Frederiksen emphasized.
She also commented on Putin’s recent phone call with US President Donald Trump, noting that it reflects the Kremlin’s fear of a strong Ukraine.
“It was Putin who called President Trump some days ago because he was scared that Ukraine would get the upper hand. Yet he rejected Trump's proposal for a ceasefire along the current front lines. a suggestion that we support, and the same goes for you and Ukraine. But Putin doesn't want to stop the killings. There is no indication that Russia and Putin want peace, not even a ceasefire,” the prime minister said.
According to Frederiksen, in response to Russia’s continued aggression and hybrid warfare against the West, the Coalition of the Willing agreed to increase pressure on Moscow.
This includes coordinated steps to secure long-term funding for Ukraine, develop its defense industry, purchase American weapons, and impose new sanctions on the Russian economy.
The prime minister also recalled the EU’s 19th sanctions package, targeting Russia’s energy sector and its shadow fleet of tankers, as well as sanctions by the US and the UK against Russia’s two largest oil companies.
Coalition of the Willing
On October 24, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer announced that the Coalition of the Willing had developed a peace plan for Ukraine to be implemented by the end of 2025. It consists of several key points.
During the meeting, Starmer called on Ukraine’s allies to increase the supply of long-range weapons to strengthen Kyiv’s positions ahead of winter.
In addition, French President Emmanuel Macron, speaking at the Coalition of the Willing summit, stated that the coalition’s member countries must support Ukraine’s energy resilience and intensify pressure on Russia.
