The US decision to tighten sanctions against Russia was a turning point. The restrictions should affect Moscow's ability to finance the war against Ukraine, French President Emmanuel Macron says.
During his speech at the summit of the Coalition of the Willing, Macron emphasized that the coalition member countries must continue to support Ukraine's energy stability and increase pressure on Russia.
"The American sanctions are clearly a turning point. The efficiency of the sanctions should clearly impact the financing of the war for Russia," the President said.
According to him, the coalition has made significant progress in the fight against Russia's shadow fleet. Macron stressed that this is "a perfect complement" to the sanctions.
US sanctions against Russia
This week, the US government unexpectedly decided to impose new sanctions against Russia. They affected Russian giants Rosneft and Lukoil.
According to forecasts, this could hit the Russian budget hard, which is heavily dependent on energy sales.
Vladimir Putin has already responded to these restrictions. He believes that there will be no significant consequences for the economy.
Unnamed senior officials told CNN that the White House chief has repeatedly told advisers in recent months of his intention to take a tougher stance on Moscow in the future.
According to them, Trump relied on his own instincts and decided that the time had come to reconsider his policy toward Vladimir Putin.
