Russian President Vladimir Putin may attempt to utilize the negotiations to achieve his objectives, as Russia has not experienced significant success on the battlefield, states EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas, according to The Guardian.

Kallas emphasized that any peace agreement must include concessions from Russia. According to her, it is necessary to ensure that Russia never attacks again.

She said it is now "important to continue supporting Ukraine and pressure Russia." At the same time, all EU countries welcome the efforts of the US aimed at ending the war.

Kallas noted that the way Russia’s war against Ukraine ends is crucial. The first step toward peace must be an unconditional ceasefire, but there are no signs that Russia is ready to take such a step.

"Russia is not winding down its military machine but ramping it up. We still need to get from a situation where Russia pretends to negotiate to a situation where Russia needs to negotiate. We are getting there," the EU diplomacy chief clarified.

She also reminded of the significant impact of sanctions on the Russian economy and Russia’s failures on the battlefield.

"Putin cannot achieve his goals on the battlefield so he will try to negotiate his way there," Kallas stressed.

US peace plan

The US previously prepared a peace plan to end Russia’s war against Ukraine. It required Ukraine to agree to a number of concessions.

According to Western media, this peace plan was based on a Russian document.

In particular, Ukraine would be pressured to withdraw its troops from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions and effectively "hand them over" to the aggressor.
