The Prime Minister of Romania and head of the Social Democratic Party, Marcel Ciolacu, has resigned. This occurred following the results of the first round of the presidential elections, Digi24 reports.

"In December, a coalition government was formed with two goals: to ensure a stable government and to nominate a candidate who would win the presidential elections in Romania. One of the two goals has let us down. We saw how the Romanians voted yesterday, which means that the ruling coalition lacks legitimacy. I proposed to my colleagues to leave the ruling coalition, which implicitly leads to my resignation as Prime Minister, which I will do after meeting with you," Ciolacu stated.

He also emphasized that he chose not to publicly support either of the two candidates in the second round.

"Instead of waiting for the next president to replace me, I decided to resign," the Prime Minister underlined.

Romanian Presidential elections 2025

On the first Sunday of May 2025, presidential elections were held in Romania. This followed the Constitutional Court's annulment of the results of the previous vote held in November 2024. Initially, the court had confirmed the results of the first round, but a few days later, it reversed its decision.

This occurred after declassified documents were released, indicating that the electoral campaign of candidate Georgeșcu was influenced by external factors.

In this election, the far-right candidate George Simeon received the best result. The second place was taken by the former mayor of Bucharest, Nicușor-Daniel Dan, who also advanced to the second round.
