Ukraine is expecting a visit from an International Monetary Fund (IMF) mission at the end of August, according to the Telegram channel of Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko.

According to Svyrydenko, she held her first conversation as Prime Minister with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva today.

She thanked the head of the Fund for her warm words of support and condolences following yesterday’s Russian attack on Kyiv.

"We discussed the next steps in cooperation with the IMF. The Ukrainian team is currently working on the draft budget for 2026," Svyrydenko said.

She noted that Ukraine, together with its partners, is looking for solutions to cover the country’s financial needs during the war and to continue reforms.

"We are expecting a visit from the Fund’s mission to Kyiv at the end of August. Intense months of work and negotiations lie ahead. We count on continued support and remain committed to our obligations," the Prime Minister added.

IMF program

The International Monetary Fund’s program for 2023–2027 provides for $15.6 billion in funding from the Fund and around $150 billion from partners.

New Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko stated that Ukraine needs a new program.

"If the baseline scenario assumes that the war will continue next year, it is quite likely that we will have a new IMF program," she noted.

In June, the IMF updated its baseline scenario, under which Russia’s war against Ukraine is expected to end in late 2025.

Ukraine’s Ministry of Finance is already leaning toward including a scenario of continued war and increased spending in the draft budget.
