Presidential candidate in Poland claims Ukraine doesn’t belong in the EU or NATO, PM responds
The opposition presidential candidate in Poland, Karol Nawrocki, said that he does not see Ukraine as part of the EU or NATO. Prime Minister Donald Tusk condemned his remarks on X.
Tusk addressed the leader of the Law and Justice party, Jarosław Kaczyński, whose political party supports Karol Nawrocki's candidacy in the election, quoting Nawrocki's words about Ukraine's membership in NATO and the EU.
"Do you still remember which president supported Ukraine the most in this matter? And which one is the most opposed? Aren't you ashamed?" wrote the Polish Prime Minister.
What Nawrocki said
Speaking on Polsat News, Nawrocki, referring to Ukraine, said that "a state that cannot take responsibility for its crimes cannot be part of alliances."
"I do not see Ukraine in any structure today. Neither in the European Union nor in NATO. As president, I will tell them that we would like to see us treated as partners from the Ukrainian side," he said.
Presidential election in Poland
Poland's presidential election will take place on May 18. A second round could be held on the first day of summer, if necessary.
Current President Andrzej Duda is not eligible to run for re-election under Poland's Constitution, having already served the maximum of two terms.
At present, 11 candidates are running for the presidency of Poland. Besides Karol Nawrocki, Warsaw mayor and 2020 presidential candidate Rafał Trzaskowski is among those competing for the position.
