Poland sets date for presidential election: Details
Marshal (Speaker) of the Polish Sejm, Szymon Hołownia in Poland, announced that the presidential election will take place on May 18. A second round may occur in early June if necessary, Polsat News reports.
"After consultations with the chairman of the National Electoral Commission, I decided that the voting to elect the new President of the Republic of Poland will take place on May 18 this year. This means that if a second round is necessary, it will be held on June 1," said Hołownia.
The Speaker of the Sejm also presented a preliminary election calendar. Once the calendar is approved by the commission, it will take official effect.
Candidates for the presidency are expected to register until April 4.
Warsaw mayor to run for President
It was previously announced that the Mayor of Warsaw, Rafał Trzaskowski, will run in the presidential election as a candidate from the ruling Civic Coalition party.
According to polls, Trzaskowski is currently the leading candidate for the presidency.
Meanwhile, the current President, Andrzej Duda, has already served two terms in office, making him ineligible to run again
