Power outage hits Kyiv's left bank after blast near thermal power plant: Details

On Sunday, July 6, a fire broke out on the left bank of Kyiv, and there were partial power outages. At the same time, there were assumptions circulating online about an explosion at the thermal power plant (TPP-6).
RBC-Ukraine looked into what happened and whether there is a connection between the fire and the electricity supply problems.
Key points:
- on social media, people wrote about an explosion in the Troyeshchyna district and power outages;
- the authorities reported that the explosion has nothing to do with TPP-6;
- power supply was restored;
- rescuers localized the fire;
Explosion in Troyeshchyna district
In Kyiv, at approximately 4:20 p.m. local time, posts began appearing online about explosions in the Troyeshchyna district, after which footage was published showing thick black smoke.
Around the same time, online channels were suggesting that the explosion had likely occurred on the territory of TPP-6 (Desnianskyi district).
In addition, there were reports online about power outages in the Dniprovskyi district of the capital.
At that time there were no air raid alerts or Russian attacks on Kyiv.
What authorities say about TPP-6 and lack of electricity
The first to respond to the situation was the mayor of Kyiv, Vitali Klitschko. He reported that the information about the explosion circulating on Telegram has nothing to do with TPP-6.
"Preliminarily, a tank with fuel and lubricants exploded in the hangar of a commercial enterprise not far from the TPP. There are no casualties at this time. Emergency services are on the scene," Klitschko stated at 4:52 p.m..
A little later, the Head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, Tymur Tkachenko, commented on the situation. Tkachenko confirmed that the information about the explosion at TPP-6 was not true, but at the same time informed about the power outage.
"On the left bank, the electricity supply was lost in residential buildings on several streets. We are waiting for specialists to provide an approximate time for restoring power," the statement says.
Already at 5:29 p.m., Tkachenko reported that the power supply had been restored.
Was TPP-6 affected
As of 5:02 p.m., the supplier of district heat and hot water Kyivteploenergo stated that TPP-6 was operating in normal mode and there was no threat to Kyiv's energy supply.
In addition, the company refuted the information about the smoke and explosion, noting that the fire incident took place at an enterprise outside the TPP-6 territory.
"The station's equipment is operating normally, and there are no explosions or fires on the territory of the combined heat and power plant. There are no outages for consumers receiving electricity from the station. There is also no threat to Kyiv's energy supply," Kyivteploenergo informed.
Extinguishing fire in Desnianskyi district
The Kyiv State Emergency Service clarified the situation with the fire in a comment to RBC-Ukraine. They confirmed the incident and at the same time informed that the fire was not related to TPP-6 and that it had already been localized.
"In the Desnianskyi district on Pukhivska Street, at 4:13 p.m., a report about a fire was received. There was ignition of temporary structures and the spread to nearby vehicles. The fire has already been localized. Information that it is related to TPP-6 is not true. This is an open area, and its ownership is being clarified. The causes of the fire will be established by law enforcement," the State Emergency Service said.
The rescuers also clarified that 5 units of primary and special fire-rescue equipment and 25 personnel were working on site.
By the way, in his post, the Head of the Kyiv City State Administration also reported that the fire had been localized.

Power outages in Kyiv
Power supply problems in the capital sometimes occur, in particular, due to enemy attacks. This was the case on the night of June 17.
At that time, during an attack by Shahed drones, power outages were recorded in some districts of the capital.
