Pope Leo XIV expressed solidarity with Ukraine amid the harsh winter and the war's consequences by organizing the delivery of humanitarian aid, including generators, medicines, and food, reports Vatican News.
At the pontiff’s initiative, three trucks carrying 80 electric generators were sent to Ukraine and have already arrived on site. The aid is intended to support the population amid severe cold and damaged energy infrastructure.
The generators are intended for heating points and shelters where people are forced to stay during power outages. According to the Vatican, nighttime temperatures in Ukraine during this period fell to -15°C, with daytime highs of -10 to -12°C. The generators will also enable hot meal preparation at these locations.
Alongside the generators, thousands of medical supplies were delivered to Ukraine, including antibiotics, anti-inflammatory drugs, dietary supplements, and melatonin, which helps people under constant stress and anxiety improve their sleep.
The humanitarian shipment departed from the Basilica of Saint Sophia in Rome, a spiritual center for Ukrainians in Italy, and was delivered to Kyiv and Fastiv, areas that have suffered significant damage from recent attacks.
Another truck carrying medicines and food is being prepared. Upon arrival, the aid will be distributed through the network of parishes across various dioceses in Ukraine.
Pope Leo XIV recently called on the world to intensify efforts to end the war in Ukraine. The pontiff highlighted the suffering of civilians and the urgent need for a just and lasting peace.
Last month, he also addressed Russia, demanding a halt to attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure and stressing the severe humanitarian consequences for the civilian population.
