Ukraine is ready to consider the possibility of easing sanctions against Russia if it leads to a peace agreement that ensures justice and security for Ukrainians. Kyiv emphasizes, however, that sanctions must remain a lever to compel Russia to take real steps toward ending the war, Politico reports.

Ukraine is willing to consider easing sanctions on Russia if it contributes to achieving justice and security for Ukrainians under a peace agreement, stated Vladyslav Vlasiuk, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s commissioner for sanctions policy.

According to Vlasiuk, the economic restrictions imposed on Russia should serve the purpose of forcing the country to end its aggression and agree to peace.

"These sanctions are not just punishment; they must become a lever to achieve lasting peace," Vlasiuk emphasized.

Vlasuk noted that the return to business relations with Russia depends on specific conditions, namely, when Russia takes concrete steps to end the war. He also pointed out that sanctions should be used in a way that causes pain for Russia and forces it to negotiate.

Amid Russia's economic difficulties, which are linked to sanctions and losses from energy revenues, Vlasuk stressed the importance of ensuring justice for Ukrainians, considering the scale of the casualties.

He added that Kyiv is also seeking compensation for the suffering Ukrainians have endured due to the war.

Economic measures

Ukraine's position aligns with US President Donald Trump’s statement that he is ready to end the war while simultaneously halting aid to Ukraine if Russia agrees to negotiations.

Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized the need for stricter economic measures to compel Russia to make peace.

International partners, including European countries, are also discussing the possibility of restoring normal economic relations with Moscow after the war ends.

For example, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte stated that the restoration of cooperation with Russia could become a reality after the cessation of hostilities.

Sanctions on Russia

After the full-scale invasion, the West imposed sanctions aimed at isolating Russia and weakening its economic and military potential.

The sanctions have included a broad range of measures, from financial restrictions, such as disconnecting Russian banks from the SWIFT system, to bans on the export of high-tech goods, including microchips, aviation equipment, and advanced technologies. In addition, personal sanctions have been placed on high-ranking officials, oligarchs, and companies associated with the regime of dictator Vladimir Putin.

Furthermore, the European Union is already working on its 17th package of sanctions against Russia. Foreign ministers have discussed increasing military aid to Ukraine.
