Polish Prime Minister describes Ukraine's operation in Kursk region as defensive
Military actions in the Kursk region are defensive. Ukraine has the right to paralyze Russia's aggressive intentions, states Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk.
In his view, the behavior of Russian troops in Ukraine exhibits signs of genocide, and Ukraine has full rights to halt Russia's aggressive intentions.
"Ukraine's actions are defensive. What Russian troops and Russian aviation are doing in Ukraine displays signs of genocide and inhumane crimes. And Ukraine has every right to conduct the war in a way that most effectively paralyzes Russia in its aggressive intentions," said the Polish Prime Minister during a press briefing on August 13.
Additionally, when asked by journalists whether NATO member states are concerned that the weapons sent to Ukraine for defense are being used in operations in the Kursk region, Tusk said he would be very cautious with such formulations.
The Polish Prime Minister assured that Warsaw maintains constant contact with Kyiv at the highest political level and added that he is not surprised by this unconventional and, for some, unexpected shift in the situation on the front line.
Greatest risk for Poland and Europe
Donald Tusk also emphasized that Poland’s position on the war in Ukraine remains unchanged.
"We support Ukraine in a war that is a defensive war," he said.
Furthermore, the Polish Prime Minister noted that the greatest risk for Poland and Europe is that Ukraine loses the war and Russia wins.
"This is a risk that directly affects Poland and, I believe, all of Europe. Therefore, Ukraine’s actions to prevent this scenario are also actions for our security," he added.
The head of government assured that Ukraine is well aware of the intended use of the weapons received from Western allies.
"I am not only impressed but also certain that there has been no abuse of trust - our Polish, American, or European trust - by Ukraine," Tusk concluded.
Operation in the Kursk region and the Western response
In the week since the start of the military operation, Ukrainian forces have taken control of 74 settlements in the Kursk region.
Ukraine's Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the operation aids the Ukrainian military on the internal front and complicates Russian logistics.
US President Joe Biden commented that the operation created a real dilemma for Putin.
