Poland to deploy sirens near Ukraine border as Russian attacks intensify

Poland is expanding its emergency warning siren network in the country's east amid growing risks from Russian strikes near the Ukrainian border, Interior Minister Marcin Kierwiński says.
Why Poland expands its siren network
According to the interior minister, Poland has installed more than 1,000 automated warning sirens along its eastern border.
For comparison, at the beginning of 2024, only about 30 sirens in the region could be activated remotely. That number has now risen to nearly 350.
Kierwiński stressed that Russia has changed its strike tactics. Border crossings and other infrastructure near the Polish border are increasingly being targeted by missiles and jet-powered drones.
As a result, Polish authorities have been forced to actively use additional measures to protect civilians and counter potential threats.
Incidents near Polish border
Strengthening of civil defense measures follows a series of Russian attacks near Poland's borders:
Airport shutdowns: During a large-scale Russian air attack on western Ukraine, Polish and NATO fighter jets were scrambled, while the airports in Lublin and Rzeszów temporarily suspended operations.
Explosion near a border crossing: Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk confirmed a powerful explosion just a few hundred meters from the Polish border crossing in Dorohusk following a strike on a Ukrainian gas station.
Railway strike: On September 13, a Russian drone struck the locomotive of a passenger train at a station two kilometers from the Polish border. The incident occurred shortly after a diplomatic train had departed from the same station.
Although these incidents did not violate Polish airspace, the proximity of the fighting has significantly increased concerns about the security of the country's eastern flank.
Russian provocations along the border with Poland
As reported, the situation along the Polish-Ukrainian border remains tense due to regular Russian attacks on border infrastructure and logistics hubs.
In particular, Prime Minister Donald Tusk previously reported a Russian drone strike near border crossings in Dorohusk, which caused a powerful explosion just a few hundred meters from Poland.
In response, Warsaw decided to deploy military aircraft to protect its airspace.
In addition to expanding the warning siren network, Poland is building an electronic barrier along its border with Ukraine.
The new security and surveillance system will cover a section more than 100 kilometers long to strengthen security amid continued Russian provocations.
