Earlier on Thursday, Axios reported, citing Ukrainian sources and the White House, that the next round of talks on a peace plan for Ukraine was expected to take place in Paris on December 13. The publication stated that the meeting was to involve senior US officials and representatives from Ukraine, France, Germany, and the United Kingdom as part of discussions surrounding the US peace proposal.
According to Axios, Ukraine and European countries were expected to be represented by national security advisers. At the same time, it remained unclear whether US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who also serves as National Security Adviser to President Donald Trump, would attend.
The US president commented on the planned meeting nearly a day earlier. He confirmed that talks in Paris were expected but said he was not yet certain whether the United States would send a representative. He added that Washington would only do so if there were a good chance of achieving tangible results.
The remarks were likely linked to expectations that Ukraine might agree to the US peace plan in its current form. In recent days, the Wall Street Journal reported that Trump, during a phone call, urged European leaders to put pressure on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to accept the American proposal.
Separately, the German government’s press service reported that Chancellor Friedrich Merz is set to meet with Zelenskyy on Monday to discuss the current state of peace negotiations on Ukraine. European leaders, along with representatives of the European Union and NATO, are expected to take part in those talks.
