The Pentagon has reduced the number of combat brigade groups in Europe from four to three — returning to the 2021 level. This has led to a temporary delay in the deployment of US troops in Poland, according to a statement from Pentagon spokesman Sean Parnell on the social media platform X.
What the Pentagon decided
The decision is the result of a comprehensive, multi-level analysis of the American military presence in Europe.
The final decision on the deployment of these and other forces in Europe will be made after further analysis of the United States' strategic and operational needs, as well as the ability of allies to independently ensure the defense of the continent.
Defense Secretary Hegseth spoke with Polish Deputy Prime Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz. The Pentagon promises to maintain a strong military presence in Poland.
Message to allies
The statement emphasizes that the decision aligns with the America First agenda and is intended to encourage NATO allies to assume primary responsibility for the conventional defense of Europe.
Poland is called an exemplary ally.
"Poland has shown both the ability and resolve to defend itself. Other NATO allies should follow suit," the Pentagon statement said.
The Pentagon's decision comes amid broader European security challenges.
Earlier, the FT reported that the US had warned allies of possible delays in weapons deliveries due to the depletion of American stockpiles after the war with Iran — specifically ammunition for HIMARS, NASAMS, and Patriot.
The warnings were received by the UK, Poland, Lithuania, and Estonia. At the same time, European allies are in no hurry to transfer their own Patriot missile stocks to Ukraine, fearing a weakening of their own air defense.
