Europe must give its approval for a peace agreement between Ukraine and Russia, as it affects European interests and sovereignty, states German Chancellor Friedrich Merz, according to The Telegraph.
"We continue to support Ukraine: We seek a ceasefire as soon as possible, a just and durable peace for Ukraine and security for Europe," he said.
According to Merz, "any plan affecting European interests and sovereignty" requires its approval.
The German chancellor’s statement came after the White House announced that a peace agreement is nearly finalized.
Today, November 25, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said that the US has involved both Ukraine and Russia in the peace talks.
She noted that there are still "a few delicate, but not insurmountable, details" that need to be resolved and will require further negotiations between Ukraine, the US, and Russia.
Merz’s conditions
Earlier, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz stated that the full-scale war in Ukraine can only end if the conditions are acceptable to both Kyiv and the EU.
The German chancellor emphasized that the terms on which the war ends will have consequences for the security of EU countries.
The 28-point US peace plan, reported by leading Western media, included provisions that Ukraine would not be able to join NATO. In addition, it would have to "formalize a neutral status."
