PACE Vice President explains why Trump’s peace efforts on Russia-Ukraine war failed

According to Touhig, it is difficult to understand what goals the American leader is pursuing.

"One day he says, 'Oh, there are going to be tariffs on this, ' the next day, there are no tariffs. So one day, he says, 'Yes, I can do a deal with Putin'. Then he can't. Then he says that I'm going to work to get this sorted out, and he doesn't," the politician notes.

The PACE representative stresses that Ukraine is largely dependent on US support, but Trump's unpredictability complicates cooperation:

"Today it's all to take all your lands back. Tomorrow you've got to make concessions. So I don't think he is seriously engaged in the peace process. I think it's a box tick," Touhig adds.

He concludes that it is currently extremely difficult for both Kyiv and NATO to understand Trump's real intentions and assess the prospects of his peace plan.

Trump's peace initiatives

Since the beginning of his second term, US President Donald Trump has been trying to bring an end to the Russian-Ukrainian war. To this end, he has repeatedly contacted Russia's Vladimir Putin, including a meeting between them in Alaska in August.

However, Putin rejected Trump's proposals for a complete ceasefire and, after the talks, even intensified missile strikes on Ukrainian civilian infrastructure.

Against this backdrop, Trump admitted that Putin had disappointed him, noting that their good relationship was meaningless.

Despite this, in September, the American President expressed confidence that the war would end, everything would be done right, and positive news could come soon.

According to him, relations between Putin and Zelenskyy are terrible. However, a solution to end the war will be found.
