Hungarian Prime Minister Péter Magyar made a new statement regarding Russia’s war against Ukraine and commented on the possible conditions for ending it. He also touched on the future relations between Kyiv and Budapest, according to HVG.

Magyar confirmed that Ukraine has the right to defend its sovereignty following Russia’s full-scale invasion.

"Ukraine is a victim and has every right to defend its territorial integrity," the Hungarian prime minister said.

According to him, the first step toward ending the war should be a long-term ceasefire. Only after that, in his opinion, should a lasting peace with international security guarantees be achieved.

Magyar also mentioned the 1994 Budapest Memorandum, stressing that any new guarantees must be far more reliable.

Hungary raises the minority rights issue again

During a joint press conference with Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk, the Hungarian prime minister also announced the start of technical consultations between Kyiv and Budapest regarding the situation of the Hungarian minority in Zakarpattia.

According to Magyar, the issue of minority rights remains an important condition for Hungary’s support for Ukraine’s accession to the EU. Meanwhile, during the discussion of the security situation, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk also said that the risk of further escalation of the war remains high.

He noted that NATO is closely monitoring the situation, including provocations and drone activity near the Alliance’s borders.

Earlier, Péter Magyar stated his intention to restore greater influence to the Visegrád Group within the EU and consider its possible expansion.

It was also reported that Hungary and Ukraine had already begun technical talks on the linguistic, educational, and cultural rights of the Hungarian community in Zakarpattia.
