Overnight Russian air assault on Ukraine fails to break defenses, most targets destroyed

On the night of April 21, Russia launched 143 attack drones and two ballistic missiles at Ukraine, reports the Ukrainian Air Force.
The attack was repelled by aviation, air defense units, electronic warfare forces, and mobile fire groups.
Where the attack came from
According to the Air Force, Shahed-type drones, as well as Gerbera, Italmas, and other modifications, were launched from several directions:
- Kursk, Bryansk, Oryol, Millerovo — from Russian territory;
- Primorsko-Akhtarsk — also from Russia;
- Hvardiiske — from temporarily occupied Crimea;
- from the occupied areas of the Donetsk region.
Two Iskander-M ballistic missiles were launched from Russia's Kursk region.

What was shot down
According to preliminary data as of 08:00 a.m. Kyiv time, Ukrainian air defenses destroyed or suppressed 116 enemy drones in the north, south, and east of the country.
One ballistic missile was intercepted, while the fate of the second is still being clarified.
A total of 22 drones reached their targets, with hits recorded at 17 locations. Debris from downed UAVs fell at seven additional sites.
As of this morning, enemy drones remain in Ukraine’s airspace. The Air Force urges citizens to follow safety rules and not ignore air raid alerts.
Overnight, Sumy came under attack. According to local authorities, more than five drone strikes were recorded in the Zarichnyi district of the city: residential buildings were damaged, the roof of a hospital was hit, and civilian cars caught fire. Fifteen people were injured.
Meanwhile, Russian forces carried out 725 strikes on the city of Zaporizhzhia and the surrounding district in a single day — two people were killed and ten others injured.
