Over 4,000 trucks waiting at Ukraine-Poland border: Situation update
As of the morning of December 23, four directions on the Polish-Ukrainian border continue to be blocked. More than 4,000 trucks are in the queue, reports the spokesperson of the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine, Andriy Demchenko, during a television marathon.
The following directions remain blocked:
- Rava-Ruska-Krebené
- Krakovets-Korcheva
- Shehyni-Medyka
- Yahodyn-Dorohusk
According to information from Polish border guards, there are more than 4,000 trucks waiting in queues towards Ukraine. Unfortunately, the movement is blocked. Movement for cars and buses is not blocked, as Demchenko explained.
According to the State Border Guard Service of Ukraine spokesperson, for example, if we talk about the checkpoint Yahodyn-Dorohusk, previously, the border at this checkpoint was crossed by 1,200-1,500 trucks in both directions. However, today, the number of trucks varies from 120 to 150, which is practically 10 times less.
Polish carrier strike
Since November 6, Polish carriers have been on strike at the border with Ukraine. They planned to continue this "action" until the beginning of January 2024. As a result of the protest, several directions were blocked, allowing no more than one truck in and out per hour.
On November 23, carriers also blocked the Medyka-Shehyni checkpoint. There were also reports of intentions to extend the blockade to Nyzhankovychi-Malhovitse.
Yesterday, on December 22, Ukrainian and Polish officials agreed on an action plan to unblock border checkpoints.
"The key result of the meeting is the agreement on joint positions regarding the unblocking of the border. The parties have reached an understanding on compromise solutions and their implementation," said the Ministry of Community Development, Territories, and Infrastructure of Ukraine.
Meanwhile, representatives of Poland announced their intention to unblock the border by the end of the year.
