Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán commented on US actions toward Iran, saying it is currently unclear what exactly US President Donald Trump has started — war or a path to peace, Orbán said in an interview with GB News.

Answering a question about how his peace position aligns with Trump's actions, who launched a military operation against Iran, Orbán said that it is too early to make assessments.

"The question is whether he has started a war or a peace. It hasn't been decided yet. Historians will make a decision on that," the Hungarian prime minister said.

According to Orbán, during their last meeting Trump explained his position to him, noting that Iran is a source of military tension, and therefore a strike on it can be seen as an attack on a center of conflicts.

At the same time, the head of the Hungarian government emphasized that it is still difficult to assess whether the US-Israeli operation will bring peace or, on the contrary, lead to further escalation.

Orbán also refused to disclose details of his conversations with the US president. According to him, Trump did not give permission to make such information public.

"I'm a more cautious guy than the president," he added.

Relations between Orbán and Trump

US President Donald Trump publicly supported his close ally Viktor Orbán ahead of parliamentary elections. He called him "a true friend, fighter, and winner."

At the beginning of November 2025, the American leader warmly received the Hungarian prime minister at the White House, calling him a good friend and clearly demonstrating his support.

For Hungary and Orbán future elections, this meeting brought good results and strengthened relations with the United States. The Hungarian prime minister even predicted a golden time in relations between the two countries.

In addition, the United States granted Hungary a one-year exemption from US sanctions for the use of Russian energy resources.

US war against Iran

Since February 28, Israel and the United States have been conducting a joint military operation against Iran. Trump explained its start by the failure of negotiations on a nuclear deal, although media reported that Israel and Saudi Arabia may have influenced the decision.

Later, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt outlined the main goals of the operation.

It also became known that the Trump administration does not rule out options for a ground operation on Iranian territory to seize nuclear materials, but no final decision has yet been made.
