US President Donald Trump has publicly expressed his support for Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán ahead of the parliamentary elections scheduled for April 2026, according to a post on Trump’s Truth Social account.

The US leader described Orbán as a true friend, fighter, and winner, and noted that relations between Hungary and America have reached new heights of cooperation and impressive achievements during his administration.

“Viktor Orbán is a true friend, fighter, and winner, and has my complete and total endorsement for re-election as Prime Minister of Hungary — he will never let the great people of Hungary down,” Trump wrote.

The White House leader also reminded that he had previously supported Orbán during the 2022 parliamentary elections, in which the Fidesz party secured a decisive victory and Orbán became Prime Minister of Hungary for the fourth consecutive term.

“I look forward to continuing working closely with him so that both of our countries can further advance this tremendous path to success and cooperation,” the US leader added.

Elections in Hungary

The upcoming elections in Hungary could be some of the most challenging for Orbán in recent years. While Fidesz remains the country’s most influential political force, opposition parties are gradually gaining ground.

In particular, the newly formed centrist party Tisza, led by Péter Magyar and supporting Ukraine’s EU membership, is narrowing the gap with the ruling party according to recent polls.

Hungary’s parliamentary elections are scheduled for April 12. On January 10, the ruling Fidesz party officially nominated Orbán as its candidate for prime minister in the upcoming vote. Orbán himself has previously expressed his readiness to lead the government again.

The policies of Hungary’s current prime minister have long drawn sharp criticism from the EU. Brussels has repeatedly accused the Hungarian government of undermining democratic institutions, pressuring independent media and the judiciary, and violating the rule of law. At the same time, Orbán maintains a hardline stance on migration and the EU’s sanctions policies.

Orbán has claimed there are allegedly daily threats from Ukraine, linking them to the approaching elections in Hungary. According to him, Kyiv is trying to bring about a pro-Ukrainian government in his country.

RBC-Ukraine also reported that Orbán recently made another strong statement regarding Kyiv’s EU integration. He insisted that Budapest would not support Ukraine’s EU membership for a century.
