Orbán misunderstands conflict, EU, China, and US could mediate - Presidential Office
Kyiv considers the tour of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban as a "technical" trip. He does not understand the nature of the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, and therefore cannot be a mediator, according to the Advisor to the head of the Presidential Office Mykhailo Podolyak.
As Podolyak noted, during his tour, Orbán did not have a mandate from the European Union (EU).
"We consider this a "technical" trip. He came here, clearly expressed his very peculiar position on this war: that we should stop defending ourselves. Then he goes to Moscow, meets with Putin (Vladimir Putin, President of Russia) and talks about Ukraine's capitulation," Podolyak said.
As the advisor to the Head of the Presidential Office noted, after Orbán's trip to Moscow, Russia struck Okhmadyt children's hospital. According to him, the Prime Minister of Hungary does not understand the nature of the conflict, and therefore cannot act as a mediator.
At the same time, as Podolyak mentioned, the only possible mediators could be:
- The EU
- China
- The United States of America
Orbán's 'peace mission'
On July 2, Orbán visited Kyiv, where he met with the President of Ukraine. A few days later, he traveled to Moscow. There, he met with Vladimir Putin and, on July 8, met with Chinese leader Xi Jinping.
The EU is currently deciding how to react to the so-called "peace mission" of the head of the Hungarian government.
According to Orbán's press chief Bertalan Havasi, during the NATO summit, the Prime Minister met with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and asked him to support his "peace mission."
