The Prime Minister of Hungary, Viktor Orbán, complained about an allegedly unprecedented operation by Ukrainian intelligence services against his country, according to the Prime Minister's page on Facebook.

In the posted video, the Hungarian Prime Minister noted that on Tuesday, May 13, a meeting of the Defense Council took place, which he convened due to the unprecedented attack by intelligence services on his country in recent days.

According to Orbán, Ukraine allegedly launched a targeted smear campaign against Hungary to prevent a referendum on EU membership.

During the meeting, it was also revealed that the Ukrainians had restored contacts with Hungary for the operation and allegedly carried out an attack on the Hungarian Defense Forces with the help of the Hungarian side.

"The Hungarian opposition party actively participated in the operation of the Ukrainian intelligence services. This has never happened in our memory. We should expect further actions by the intelligence services until the sociological survey is completed. The Hungarian intelligence services are prepared for this," Orbán said.

He also added that a referendum would be held in the country, because neither Brussels nor Kyiv can decide on behalf of the Hungarians.

Referendum in Hungary

In March, Viktor Orbán announced that a referendum would be held in Hungary regarding Ukraine's accession to the European Union.

Although the vote is voluntary and will not have legal force, Budapest could use its results to strengthen its political position in discussions with Brussels.

The Prime Minister is also actively convincing the Hungarian population that Ukraine's EU membership would destroy Hungary's economy.

Meanwhile, a public opinion survey revealed that more than half of Hungarians support Ukraine's EU membership.

According to media reports, Brussels is seeking a way to bypass Budapest's blocking of negotiations on Ukraine's EU accession.
