The Lukoil oil refinery, Nizhny Novgorodnefteorgsintez (NORSI), which is among the top five largest in Russia, has partially halted production following a drone strike, Reuters informs.

According to the agency, as a result of a drone strike on the refinery on Wednesday, May 20, about half of its production capacity was shut down.

In particular, the CDU-6 primary crude distillation unit was taken offline. It accounts for 53% of the plant’s capacity — 25,700 tons per day.

Since yesterday, the plant has also stopped producing small wholesale batches of motor fuel and has suspended gasoline sales on the exchange.

NORSI, which is the second-largest gasoline producer in Russia, can process 16 million metric tons of oil per year, equivalent to about 320,000 barrels per day.

"The shutdown of the CDU-6 unit at NORSI will lead to a sharp decline in the refinery's output, adding further uncertainty to ‌Russia's energy sector and fuel supply," Reuters wrote.

On May 18, the Lukoil Nizhny Novgorodnefteorgsintez refinery in Kstovo came under a strike by Ukraine’s Defense Forces. A fire broke out at the facility.

In addition, on the night of May 21, social media reported a fire at the Syzran refinery. Local residents first heard air defense activity, followed by explosions.

Later, President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed a strike on the Syzran refinery, located more than 800 kilometers from Ukraine’s border, where a large-scale fire was recorded.
