Iceland’s Foreign Minister Thórgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir said she is "optimistic" about the possibility of her country joining the European Union as early as 2028, reports Reuters.

According to Thórgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, Iceland and the European Union have previously disagreed on fishing quotas and agriculture, which affect one of the country’s key economic sectors.

She also noted that any new negotiations should focus from the very beginning on the main issues, which she identified as fisheries, agriculture, and the labor market.

"If we do that, then I'm pretty ‌optimistic then we will be, before the end of the year 2028, a member of the European Union," Gunnarsdóttir said.

Ukraine’s EU accession

The US peace plan envisions an accelerated accession of Ukraine to the EU by 2027 at the latest. Washington believes it can overcome resistance from Hungary and other countries skeptical of such a decision.

In an interview with RBC-Ukraine, Vice Prime Minister for EU and NATO accession Taras Kachka said some EU member states want to review Ukraine’s reforms and wait 10–20 years before admitting the country.

Earlier, Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Ukraine will do everything to prepare for EU membership by 2027 and emphasized that he wants a concrete date.

At the same time, Ursula von der Leyen noted that it is currently impossible to set a specific accession date for Ukraine. Asked whether accession by 2027 is possible, she said Kyiv is on a "good path" toward membership.
