When it comes to Ukrainian castles, the first images that come to mind are usually the same: the majestic Kamianets-Podilskyi Castle, the well-known Khotyn Fortress, the elegant Shenborn Palace, or the classic "Golden Ring" of the Lviv region. These places are beautiful, but they have long lost the feeling of discovery. They are fully adapted for tourists: there are queues at ticket offices, and souvenir stalls around every corner.

RBC-Ukraine presents three remarkable hidden castles that are rarely mentioned in travel guides but are definitely worth your attention.

Ukraine is a land of hundreds of fortifications. Many of them have never made it onto tourist maps, have no Instagram pages, and are hidden so deep in forests, overgrown fields, or small villages that you can walk past them without even noticing. These are true ghost castles with a wild atmosphere, where you can be alone with history and feel like a real Indiana Jones.

Ship Castle in Sydoriv (Ternopil region)

While most fortresses were built in square or circular shapes, this castle is a unique architectural experiment. The 17th-century defensive structure, built by the Kalinowski family, stands on a high hill surrounded by a river on three sides. Due to the terrain, the castle was designed to be extremely elongated — its length is almost seven times greater than its width.

When you approach the fortress from below, it takes your breath away: the rear pointed tower together with the high walls looks exactly like a giant stone ship, cutting through the green Podilian hills at full sail.

The castle is located in the village of Sydoriv (near Husiatyn). The road leading here is not in the best condition, and the structure itself is classified as "picturesque ruins." There is no security or guides here — you can freely wander through the remains of the casemates, climb the walls, and imagine how it once held defense against the Ottoman army.

Chornokozyntsi Castle: Gate at the border of worlds (Khmelnytskyi region)

This is one of the oldest Podillia fortresses (14th century), which belonged to the bishops of Kamianets. The castle stands on the top of a steep cliff above the Zbruch River. Once, it was a powerful outpost that first took the blows of Tatar invasions.

Today, two massive round towers remain from the castle, the remains of a palace, and deep two-level underground chambers, where local extreme enthusiasts still descend with flashlights.

The highlight of the location is an incredible panoramic view. Here, the Zbruch makes a sharp bend, and standing on the ruins of the tower, you can see kilometers of wild nature of the neighboring Ternopil region. This place has a strong energy of antiquity, not diluted by modern restoration.

The village of Chornokozyntsi is located right on the edge of the Khmelnytskyi region. Logistics here are difficult, public transport runs rarely, so it can only be reached by private car. As a bonus, you will definitely be the only visitors across the entire territory of the ancient citadel.

Mykulyntsi Castle: the only living fortress (Ternopil region)

The castle in Mykulyntsi (16th century) looks like a classic medieval stronghold on the outside: a quadrangular shape, powerful corner towers with arrow slits, and a deep moat around it. It took part in dozens of battles; it was burned, destroyed, and rebuilt.

But its hidden uniqueness is something completely different. This is the only castle in Ukraine that is still... inhabited. Inside the castle courtyard, directly within the defensive walls, there are residential quarters. For several generations, a family has been living there. The descendants of a former servant of the Counts Rey were granted permission to live on the fortress grounds back in the early 20th century.

So don’t be surprised when, after entering through the ancient gate, you see laundry hanging to dry, tomato beds, or domestic chickens right in the middle of medieval ruins.

Since part of the castle is private property, the state cannot turn it into a full-scale museum. Tourists are admitted reluctantly — you need to politely ask the owners for permission to look around the courtyard. However, such an astonishing symbiosis of the Middle Ages and everyday rural life cannot be seen anywhere else in Europe.

Tips before traveling to hidden castles

  • Only by car. The road to such places is always a test for your suspension. Be prepared for dirt roads and cobblestones.
  • Comfortable footwear and tick repellent. Since the castles are not cleared for mass tourism, most ruins in summer become overgrown with grass higher than a person, and the stones underfoot can be unstable.
  • Bring everything with you. There are no cafés or shops with water near these locations. A thermos of tea and sandwiches are your essential minimum.

Hidden castles of Ukraine are important history, but without gloss. They are decaying under the influence of time and nature, and perhaps our generation is one of the last that can see them in such a pristine, wild form.

If you are tired of predictable routes and want to see a real, non-touristy Ukraine, choose any point from this list and hit the road. The impressions will be much brighter than from overused tours.
