Odesa ports to strengthen protection against Russian attacks
Defensive measures will be increased at the ports of Odesa. The focus will also be on personnel safety and infrastructure recovery, according to the Ministry of Communities and Territories Development of Ukraine.
"We are enhancing defensive measures at every port. We are implementing additional actions to improve the level of defense capability and security," said Oleksii Kuleba, the Deputy Prime Minister for Reconstruction of Ukraine and Minister of Communities and Territories Development.
According to him, it is also necessary to ensure additional protection for personnel at enterprises within the maritime port area, including the installation of mobile shelters.
"Funds will also be allocated for the recovery of Odesa port infrastructure. In particular, this will include the modernization of key facilities and strengthening the overall security of port areas," he said.
According to the ministry, there are currently 86 vessels expected to arrive at the ports of Odesa, Chornomorsk, and Pivdennyi, set to export nearly 2 million tons of cargo. In total, more than 2,800 vessels have entered the three ports since the start of the Ukrainian corridor, carrying goods to over 50 countries worldwide.
Russia continues to carry out regular strikes on Ukrainian infrastructure, including on civilian vessels and grain storage facilities. In particular, Russian forces shelled the Odesa region with ballistic missiles on October 11, resulting in four deaths and ten injuries.
On October 9, Russian forces attacked the port infrastructure in the Odesa region, targeting a civilian container ship flying the Panamanian flag.
