Following the first day of talks in Geneva, there is an understanding that the deadline set by US President Donald Trump for Ukraine to sign the peace agreement may be significantly pushed back, according to a statement by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, cited by CNN.
Rubio confirmed that the deadline set by Trump, 27 November, is in fact "fluid." He said Washington would prefer to keep the date set by Trump, but stressed that what matters most is "very soon."
"We’ve really moved forward, so I feel very optimistic that we’re going to get there in a very reasonable period of time, very soon. Whether it’s Thursday, whether it’s Friday, whether it’s Wednesday, whether it’s Monday of the following week, we want it to be soon, because people are going to die," Rubio said in Geneva, Switzerland.
Rubio also noted that Ukraine needs security guarantees as an integral part of the peace proposal. However, he acknowledged that he "did not delve into" the details of the discussions.
"I think we all recognize that part of getting an end to this war will require for Ukraine to feel as it is safe and it is never going to be invaded or attacked again," Rubio said.
Earlier, Rubio stated that the talks with the Ukrainian and European delegations in Geneva resulted in significant progress toward peace in Ukraine. The head of the Ukrainian delegation, Andrii Yermak, similarly stated that the meeting had been very positive.
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy also reacted positively to the discussions, noting that many things are changing and that the team of US President Donald Trump is beginning to listen to Ukraine. Trump has not yet commented on the outcome of the talks.
Meanwhile, the media have reported on a separate European plan to end the war in Ukraine. The document is based on the proposal put forward by the United States, but it contains numerous differences from the original.
