Earlier this week, US President Donald Trump left the G7 summit in Canada before it officially concluded. His sudden return to the United States may have been driven by an unwillingness to communicate with some leaders, the Financial Times reports.

On Monday, June 16, Trump departed the summit ahead of schedule, skipping the second day of the event, which included a meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Trump claimed he needed to return to Washington to address the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran.

However, according to sources familiar with the discussions cited by the FT, his decision to leave was partly due to irritation with French President Emmanuel Macron, who had made a stop in Greenland and criticized Trump's plans to take control of the island. Trump was also reportedly disinterested in meeting with the Ukrainian leader.

Macron visits Greenland

On Sunday, June 15, President Emmanuel Macron arrived in Greenland, becoming the first head of a foreign state to visit the autonomous territory following threats from US President Donald Trump about a potential annexation.

The French President's visit included a visit to a glacier and boarding a Danish frigate. According to Le Figaro, these acts served as symbolic gestures - signals of support for Greenland's sovereignty and territorial integrity, its economic development, and a call to action amid the alarming glacier melt.

Furthermore, the following day, Macron expressed France's readiness to participate in joint exercises aimed at strengthening security in Greenland.

Trump's claims on Greenland

US President Donald Trump has repeatedly stated that Greenland should become part of the United States.

The American leader even went so far as to threaten the possible use of force to realize his ambitions.
