Norway scrambled its F-35 fighter jets to intercept a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft. Residents of a northern Norwegian town reported hearing explosions, Altaposten reports.
According to the outlet, around 11:18 a.m., residents of the town of Alta heard two explosions, and buildings and windows in the town center shook. This happened as the F-35 jets flew over the town.
"I can confirm that two F-35s were on a flight, and the explosions occurred when they broke the sound barrier. I can't say more at this time," said Norwegian Air Force press officer Major Stian Roen in a comment to Altaposten.
Later, the Norwegian Air Force confirmed that the jets were scrambled as part of a QRA mission (Quick Reaction Alert for intercepts).
During the flight, the two F-35s identified a Russian Il-20 reconnaissance aircraft.
"The Russian aircraft was detected in international airspace, north of Finnmark. It was a routine operation, without any drama," the Norwegian Air Force command stated.
Russian provocations
Russian military aircraft have repeatedly violated NATO airspace.
In September, three Russian MiG-31 jets violated Estonian airspace. These aircraft are capable of carrying hypersonic Kinzhal missiles.
According to media reports, the Russian jets flew very close to Tallinn.
