Northern Europe leads support for Ukraine's EU membership, says commissioner

Ukraine's accession to the European Union is most strongly supported by the Nordic countries and the Baltic states. In Ukraine itself, there is great hope for membership, says European Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos in an interview with RBC-Ukraine.
"We have just made a survey on how the member states are supporting Ukrainian membership in the EU, and Ukraine is the most popular candidate country in 14 member states, so more than half," she said.
According to her, 91% of Swedish citizens support Ukraine's accession to the EU, 81% in Denmark, 81% in Finland, 72% in Lithuania.
" And we are also happy that we have information from Ukraine that 70% of your citizens would vote in favor of EU membership, and the number for the trust is even higher at 82%," added Kos.
In her opinion, it's not just about the numbers, as these numbers really show that there is a lot of hope for EU membership in Ukraine.
Support for EU accession
According to the Eurobarometer for the spring of 2025, 60% of European residents approve of granting EU candidate status to Ukraine, while 34% of respondents are against it.
According to the European Commissioner for Enlargement, Marta Kos, the goal of Ukraine's accession to the EU by 2023 remains valid.
According to a KIIS poll, the vast majority of Ukrainians would like to see the country join both the EU and NATO. Joining the defense alliance is a higher priority.
