The newly appointed Minister of Foreign Affairs of Iceland, Þorgerður Katrín Gunnarsdóttir, has arrived in Kyiv. This marks her first visit to Ukraine as a minister, according to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine.

During her visit, Gunnarsdóttir met with her Ukrainian counterpart, Andrii Sybiha. The parties discussed the peace formula, the need for Russia's political and economic isolation, and the path to a just peace in Ukraine.

Sybiha, in turn, thanked Iceland for its assistance in areas such as demining, logistical support, training of Ukrainian military personnel, as well as its support for the initiative on the operational procurement of weapons, financial contributions to Ukraine's military-industrial complex (MIC), and efforts in the prosthetics of injured soldiers.

Gunnarsdóttir, during the dialogue, expressed Iceland's readiness to continue supporting Ukraine, including further funding for the humanitarian initiative Grain from Ukraine.

"Ministerial negotiations are a continuation of last year's security agreement and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's visit to Reykjavik, which opened a new chapter of special partnership between Ukraine and Iceland," the Ministry of Foreign Affairs adds.

Iceland's assistance to Ukraine

From the first days of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine, Iceland condemned the aggression. Furthermore, it has actively contributed to demining Ukrainian territories, restoring energy infrastructure, and developing the defense industry following the Danish model.

At the end of May, Ukraine and Iceland signed a security guarantees agreement. Iceland is committed to providing long-term economic, humanitarian, and defense support to our country.
