Netherlands intelligence explains limited presence of DPRK troops in Russia
Russia has deployed at least 1,500 military personnel from North Korea to participate in the war against Ukraine. Dutch Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans said that according to intelligence, Moscow intended to test these soldiers' combat readiness and gauge the international response.
"We expect the troops to be stationed mainly in the Kursk region and to consist primarily of special units from the North Korean army,” said Brekelmans.
He added that the initial deployment offered Russia an opportunity to test the North Korean soldiers and assess international reactions.
Deployment of North Korean troops to the war against Ukraine
South Korean intelligence previously reported that North Korea is involved in the war against Ukraine and has decided to send 12,000 soldiers, including a special forces unit. The movement of troops has already begun.
A White House spokesperson confirmed on October 23 that, earlier this month, North Korea had sent at least 3,000 troops to eastern Russia, stating that they are currently undergoing training.
According to Ukraine’s intelligence, North Korean soldiers are already in the Kursk region's combat area. Financial Times reported that Vladimir Putin is emphasizing the involvement of North Korean military forces in an attempt to regain control over parts of the Kursk region currently held by Ukrainian forces.
